In 2017, self employment peaked at 9.58% in February and has been declining but it did move up slightly in August.
In August there were 15.15 million self employed Americans and 160.57 million employed Americans resulting in a self employed percentage of 9.44% for August, hence the RBI for August is 9.44.
The RBI is released one month behind the release of Jobs data in order to incorporate subsequent adjustments in the data.
Adam Radly Robert Bates created the RBI to track entrepreneurial activity in the United States.
The RBI Entrepreneurship Index measures the % of the active workforce that is self employed.
The RBI is updated monthly at the same time as the monthly jobs data is released. The RBI is based on data from the US Bureau Of Labor Statistics.
